Number of infections with COVID-19 could exceed 31,000 in May

The number of infections with the novel coronavirus disease could exceed 31,000 in Moldova in May if the current indicators concerning the incubation period and the coronavirus contagion rate remain the same. If strict prevention measures are respected, mortality can decline ten times, IPN reports, quoting data of the National Public Health Agency.

Alexei Ceban, epidemiologist of the Agency, in a press briefing on April 4 said that according to the information that is analyzed daily, the average incubation period is of almost six days. This is the period between contact with the pathogen agent and the moment when symptoms appear. There was also calculated the contagion rate or the rate of infection from a person. Most of the countries report a contagion rate of 3-3.5. In Moldova, this rate now stands at 2.6.

“If we respect the strict testing and isolation measures, the contagion rate can decrease to 1.5, which is a positive scenario. The morbidity will thus decline ten times,” stated Alexei Ceban. He also said that if strict control is ensured, the burden on the healthcare system will also diminish.

As many as 591 cases of infection with COVID-19 have been confirmed in Moldova so far. The novel coronavirus disease claimed nine lives, including of two doctors. A number of 27 persons were cured.
