Number of drownings and fires is on the rise

The number of drownings and fires has been on the rise lately, and the heat wave increases the risks. The information was presented by the chief of the Civil Protection and Emergencies Service Mihail Harabagiu during the meeting of the Emergencies Commission, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to Mihail Harabagiu, each day firefighters deal with 12 fires caused by burning dried vegetation. Compared to last year, the overall number of fires increased by 95% and killed 83 people, including 5 children, causing material damages of about 16 million lei. Summer brought an increase in the number of drownings as well. In June 2011, there were only 29 recorded drownings. This year, in the same period, the number rose to 66, including 13 children. Usually, people drown because of imprudence or excessive alcohol consumption. There are 4222 water pools in Moldova and only 19 lifeguard stations, which saved 245 people from drowning. Prime Minister Vlad Filat stressed the need for efficient collaboration between local and central public authorities in order to prevent and deal with emergencies.
