Number of broadband internet users rose by 44% in 2010
The number of users of fixed-location broadband Internet services rose in 2010 by 44% on the previous year, amounting to 269,000; the number of 3G mobile Internet users rose to 119,000, according to data from the National ICT Regulatory Agency (ANRCETI), Info-Prim Neo reports.
The penetration rate of broadband Internet access at fixed locations, per 100 inhabitants, increased over 2009, by 2.3 percentage points and reached 7.55 %.
On this trend, the number of dial-up Internet users decreased dramatically by 95 per cent, to under one thousand.
In 2010 the total sales on the market of Internet services at fixed locations increased by 21.7% to 527.3 million lei. The increase was due to higher sales of the companies Starnet and Moldtelecom: Starnet sales grew by 95% to 79 million lei, as sales of Moldtelecom rose by 16,5% to over 348.2 million lei. Orange Moldova's sales on this market stood at 22.7 million lei, down by 4.7% on 2009. The overall sales of other operators rose by 10.5% to 77.4 million lei. Moldtelecom held the largest market share – 72%, followed by Starnet, with 26.2%.
According to ANRCETI, the broadband service market sees rapid growth due to the increasing availability of these services and lower tariffs.
