Number of animals with rabies goes up

About 3,000 people annually go to the hospital after being bitten by animals. Specialists recommend seeing a doctor immediately after being bitten as the number of animals suffering from rabies has increased and these pose a threat to people, IPN reports.

According to the National Public Health Center, 167 sick animals were recorded in 2014, as opposed to 130 in 2013. Most of these were detected in Chisinau, Nisporeni, Straseni, and Orhei.

”The persons bitten by any kind of animals must immediately go to the hospital for examination so as to receive the recommended treatment and avoid tragic consequences. A number of 264 persons  avoided being infected with rabies in 2014 because they sought help on time and received the indicated treatment,” says a press release of the Center.

Among the profylactic measures recommended by specialists is the annual vaccination of domestic dogs against rabies. The number of dogs suffering from rabies increased from 38 in 2013 to 63 in 2014. Measures should be also taken in respect of animals without shelter. Contact with such animals should be avoided.
