The notion of “handicapped” in Articles 50 and 51 of the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova will be replaced with “disability”. A bill to this effect was passed by Parliament after giving it a final reading, IPN reports.
According to Democratic MP Valentina Buliga, the Constitution is amended with the aim of ensuring and promoting conditions of equality so that the persons with disabilities could fully enjoy the basic human rights and freedoms.
With the ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Moldova pledged to implement its provisions that ban disability discrimination. Such recommendations were also included in the Ombudsperson’s Report on the observance of human rights and freedoms in the Republic of Moldova.
