Nothing has changed to the better, LADOM report

The League for the Defense of Human Rights of Moldova (LADOM) has presented the third report on the monitoring of the electoral campaign for the July 29 legislative elections. The use of public resources for the election runners’ benefit, the intimidation of the voters and offering of electoral presents are only some of the violations identified by the LADOM observers. “If we take into account all the infringements of the electoral legislation that we mentioned in the report, we can say that the July 29 elections will not be free or, in the best case, will be partly free,” Paul Strutzescu, the president of LADOM, told a news conference on Monday. Strutzescu said that unlike the previous reports, the quality of the electoral campaign and of methods used by the electoral contenders has worsened. The LADOM observers also said that many electoral advertisements have been placed in unauthorized places. The League formulated a set of recommendations for the Central Election Commission, asking it to draw up a monitoring report on the early elections and to create a mechanism for checking the electoral registers. The report covers the period between July 16 and 27, 2009. It is the third monitoring report prepared with the help of over 200 observers that worked in all the districts of the country.
