Norms for introducing new food products aligned with EU norms

The new food products will be introduced in Moldova in compliance with the sanitary regulations approved by the Government. According to Minister of Health Vladimir Hotineanu, the regulations define the new categories of food products and the quality requirements, Info-Prim Neo reports. The new food products specified in the regulations include products with a new primary molecular structure or intentionally modified structure, food products that consist of microorganisms, mushrooms and algae, food products that consist of plants, etc. The sanitary regulations does not cover food additives, food aromas, solvents of extracts used to make food products, vitamins and minerals, genetically modified organisms. For the new food products to be placed on the market, the private individuals or legal entities must lodge an application with the National Public Health Center, including a file with information about the products and proofs that they do not pose a threat to health. The regulations says that the National Public Health Center is obliged to assess the documents and issue an authorization for selling the goods within 90 days. Vladimir Hotineanu said the regulations bring the national legislation in compliance with the European one and facilitate the export of national new food products. He also said that the European market's potential for new food products is great. Presently, 30 plants ensure 95% of the daily vegetal calories needed by the humans worldwide. In Europa, the other 5% come from another 300 species of plants. According to the EU data, 7-10 new food products have been introduced on the market yearly during the last few years.
