No Roma child graduated from secondary school in Moldovan village during 18 years

During the 18 years of independence, no Roma child in Schinoasa village of Calarasi district finished the secondary school, the president of the Union of Young Romanies “Tarna Rom” Marin Alla has told Info-Prim Neo. According to him, most of the Romanies in Schinoasa do not know to read and write even if they attended the primary school. The access to education and the quality of the studies remains a major problem for the Roma community. “The local public administration does not take steps to make sure that these children learn to read and write. 90% of them abandon school. The education is of a very poor quality. Some of the Roma children do not know even where the school is located. The learning conditions are inadequate,” Marin Alla said. According to him, there are 52 Roma children of school age in Schinoasa, who did not attend school at all until recently. On the insistence of the local authorities and nongovernmental organizations, 38 Roma children went to school from September 1. They study in a room that is 20 square meters in area. Fourteen children who have been married by their parents remain out of school. Marin Alla said that the Ministry of Education and Youth reported 14 Roma children to be out of school in Moldova, but in reality there are about 2,500 such children. The project “Step by Step, the Roma Children can Manage” will be soon implemented in five Roma villages in Moldova. It is financed by the Roma Education Fund in Budapest. It will center on such problems faced by the Romany people as: school abandonment, access to education and quality of studies.
