'No miracles' should be expected from Tiraspol
“Even if Yevgeny Shevchuk really wanted to change something in the Transnistrian region, it would be really hard. We can’t expect miracles in the negotiations with Tiraspol”, political analyst Oazu Nantoi stated at a talk-show on Publika TV, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Political analyst Igor Botan also doesn't have high expectations after Shevchuk’s election as the new leader in Tiraspol. “This time, the people on the left side of the Nistru didn’t vote for the one controlling everything in the region, which means interesting changes took place among the people. They expect a change and Moldovan authorities are afraid of changes in the Transnistrian region”, said the analyst.
Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Eugen Carpov thinks it’s still early to say what this change means for Moldova. “However, Igor Smirnov is no longer the leader of the region, which means there is a new political elite. It’s a difficult mission for Shevchuk to bring about change. Nonetheless, beginning with tomorrow we are ready to resume the dialogue with him”, stated the official.
On December 25, the second round of the so-called elections in the self-proclaimed republic took place. The candidates who qualified from the first round were Yevgeny Shevchuk and Anatoly Kaminsky. According to initial data of the so-called Central Electoral Commission in the region, Shevchuk is the new leader in Tiraspol and Chisinau’s partner in the 5+2 negotiations.
