No matter what happens from now on, we are heading for early elections, opinion

Political analyst Ion Tabarta considers the political life in Moldova will continue to be tumultuous and, regardless of what happens starting with today, May 14, early legislative elections will take place in the country. The analyst made the statement for IPN one week after the last consultations held by the head of state with the parliamentary groups with the aim of identifying a candidate for premiership.

“It is evident that after the Liberal-Democratic and Communist MPs voted together for a number of bills, the formation of a new ruling alliance in the old format is excluded. That’s why, even if a candidate is designated, Parliament will most probably not support him. After the candidate is nominated, the mechanism of 45 days until the early elections will be set off. The PLDM and PCRM may continue to vote together so as to weaken the PDM further,” said Ion Tabarta.

The analyst considers that no agreement between the Communists and Lib-Dems is possible.  “The Communists announced repeatedly that they will not take part in governance and will not form coalitions. They voted for at least Parliament to be functional until the early elections. They plan to come to power for full tenure after the early elections. They will not agree to form a coalition for several months,” said Ion Tabrata.

According to him, all the parties of the former riling alliance will sustain losses in case of early elections. “The Communists, in the worst case, will preserve the same score as in the previous elections. But they can improve it. Surprises are possible. New forces may enter Parliament or some of the parties of the former ruling alliance will not gain seats following the rise in the election threshold,” said Ion Tabarta.

On May 14, it is a week since President Nicolae Timofti held consultations with the parliamentary factions. After the consultations, it became known that the Lib-Dems, who are entitled to designate a candidate for Prime Minister, asked for a week or 10 days to choose a candidate.

Meanwhile, the head of state promulgated four laws of those passed by the votes of the Liberal-Democratic and Communist MPs. The Democrats said after consultations that they will find it difficult to sit at the negotiating table to consider forming a new Government if the laws are promulgated.
