No dual citizenship holders among Ministers, PM says

Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev told reporters on Friday that, as far as he is concerned, neither the members of the Cabinet nor of the Government Office hold dual citizenship, but he will now for sure when the bill restricting access to state posts for dual citizenship holders comes into effect. The law in force, public officials will have to choose within a couple of months between the post and dual citizenship, Tarlev said. “State officials must swear their oath of allegiance solely to the country that pays them public money. Those who prefer dual or even multiple citizenship to the public office are welcome to choose business, tourism or whatever they want instead”, the Prime Minister emphasised. Referring to the local elected authorities, the Premier considers that such restrictions shouldn’t be placed on the incumbent ones, but they must be applied to the persons who will be elected in the years to come. Moldova’s Government launched this initiative with full consciousness, said Tarlev, adding that the measure was recommended by the European Union, which bars public offices to holders of dual citizenship. The recent proposal by the Government to impose working restrictions on holders of double citizenship, passed in first reading by the Parliament, has aroused heated discussions among the Moldova society.
