The private television channel NIT (New Televised Ideas) has three days to modify its editorial policy on the news bulletins. The Broadcasting Coordination Council (BCC) on November 5 decided that NIT will be monitored during three days. In the period, the channel will be obliged to respect the principles of pluralism of opinion, equidistance and impartiality, Info-Prim Neo reports. The Council's chairman Gheorghe Gorincioi said a television channel cannot belong to a party or a candidate. “We tolerated for too long the way in which this channel covered the events. If nothing changes during the next three days, NIT will be penalized in accordance with the law,” he said. BCC member Vitalie Tabunshchic said that in the previous meeting, the channel's representative also said that the situation will change, but nothing happened. “Such a situation can no more be tolerated. A television channel must observe the Election Code and the principles of impartiality, equidistance and pluralism,” he said. In the meeting, the head of the Council's Monitoring Division Dinu Ciocan presented a report on how the channels with national coverage reflect the election campaign in the news programs. According to the report, NIT allots more time to the Communists Party, does not respect the pluralism of opinion and is not neutral. Attending the meeting, NIT shareholder Serghei Drobot said he does not agree with the report. “We devote more attention to those who are active and are not politically biased,” he said. After arguments and discussions, Dobot assured the BCC members that the channel will obey all the principles of the Broadcasting Code. So far, the Broadcasting Coordination Council penalized NIT four times. In a new meeting next week, the BCC will analyse the results of the monitoring of the NIT's newscasts. In the same meeting, the representative of the Christian-Democratic People's Party Natalia Mihai said she filed an application, asking penalizing the radio station “Vocea Basarabiei”, which does not offer equal airtime to the election contenders. “No representative of our party was invited to the debates organized by this station during the last two weeks,” she said. A similar application was submitted by the representative of the Social Democratic Party. Thus, the Council gave the radio station three days to include representatives of the two parties in its electoral debates programs.
