NIT accused of breaches when covering referendum campaign

The private TV channel NIT is the only one of the four channels with national coverage monitored by the Broadcasting Coordination Council (BCC) that committed violations when covering the campaign for the September 5 constitutional referendum, Info-Prim Neo reports. In the September 3 meeting of the BCC, Dinu Ciocan, a representative of the Monitoring Division, said the NIT broadcast biased opinions and did not present the second source. Dmitri Bezobrazov, the representative of the NIT, explained that the subjects about the boycotting of the referendum are the focus of attention because the viewers ask for this in collective letters. He said that the channel presented the opinions of all those involved in the events. The BCC monitored the public channel Moldova 1 and the private channels Prime TV and 2 Plus during August 9-15, while the NIT – during August 24-30. BCC member Cornel Mihalache said it was not right to monitor the broadcasters during different periods of time. “Unfortunately, not all the channels are treated equally. The monitors have dissenting opinions on one subject,” he said, implying that the BCC favors certain broadcasters. The Broadcasting Coordination Council decided to take a decision on the Monitoring Division’s report at the next meeting, to which representatives of all the monitored channels will be invited. Fines could be imposed then. The report will be today submitted to the Central Election Commission. The Council also announced it will penalize the 23 broadcasters that aired electoral subjects, but did not inform the BCC about their intention to cover the referendum campaign.
