Nistru water level nearing critical

The water level in the Nistru River approaches to a critical level, but Apa-Canal Chisinau (ACC) specialists say that currently there is no risk that the Chisinau's residents may remain without water supply, reports Info-Prim Neo.
According to the last measurements the level of the water is 8.6 meters, whereas the lower critical level is 8.1 m. Such a situation had been registered ten years ago. The utility says that the Vadul lui Voda Pump Station workers are prepared to face the situation. ACC sent an official letter to representatives of the Dubasari Hydro-electric station, in which they ask them to maintain the Nistru water level.
In case the water level falls below the critical mark, a plan of actions has already been elaborated. Water reservoirs will be filled; several artesian wells will be connected to the major water supply circuit, and the population will be provided with water from local springs. Presently, of the 74 artesian wells that belong to ACC, only 30 are used to supply water. In case of emergency, 20 more wells will be connected to the Municipal water supply service. Meanwhile, the population may also get water from wells with local springs, which have been cleaned by ACC at the beginning of June; this is an important water source for Chisinau.
The last two months of drought drastically reduced the water level in rivers and still waters. In Moldova’s largest rivers, Nistru and Prut, the water level has fallen by 35% and 45%, respectively, which hinders their nearby economic activity, including potable water supply.
Presently Apa-Canal Chisinau manages 42 water reservoirs, with a total volume of 186, 500 cubic meters, which will allow supplying the population with water, using cisterns. Nevertheless, in order to handle the workload, 48 cisterns are needed. ACC already asked for help from local authorities for the dispatching of new water-supply equipment, as well as its placement in the immediate vicinity of residential blocks.
