Nicu Popescu: We are united with Romania in condemning this war

“We are united with Romania in condemning this war,” Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, stated in a news conference held together with his Romanian counterpart Bogdan Aurescu, IPN reports.

“We are united in our wish and effort to keep peace in the Republic of Moldova. We are united in protecting our citizens from the adverse effects of this war, united in our joint work to bring our country into the European Union,” stated Nicu Popescu.

The official said the Republic of Moldova needs to strengthen its defense sector. “Our country is determined to strengthen its security and defense sector, with Romania’s support as well. Given the experienced hybrid threats, we need the support of our partners to defend ourselves,” he noted.

The Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Bogdan Aurescu said that 2022 was a difficult one, but the proper communication between the Moldovan and Romanian authorities was an important factor in overcoming the obstacles. “We have a very profound discussion on how we can counteract the negative impact of the Russian Federation’s war against Ukraine. Chisinau feels the consequences of this war. The shelling in Ukraine affected the import of electrical energy and Romania intervened promptly and took emergency measures. Romania will stand permanently by the Republic of Moldova when necessary. This is the purpose of my visit here, in Chisinau,” stated Bogdan Aurescu.
