Nicu Popescu remains in office until January 29

Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, who announced his resignation today, will hold office until January 29. Subsequently, the position of minister of foreign affairs will be occupied by Mihai Popșoi. The swearing-in ceremony will take place next week, IPN reports.

According to the Government’s spokesman Daniel Vodă, Cristina Gerasimov will be appointed minister for European affairs. This is a position of minister without portfolio in the Cabinet. After taking the oath of office, the new minister will lead the newly created Bureau for European Integration.

“For example, in the Cabinet there is also Deputy Prime Minister Oleg Serebrian, who heads the Bureau for Reintegration Policies. In this case, Cristina Gerasimov will manage the Bureau for European Integration, while Mister Popșoi will lead the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” Daniel Vodă told a press conference.

Nicu Popescu tendered his resignation from the posts of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration on Wednesday morning. Later, in the Cabinet meeting, prime Minister Dorin Recean announced that Deputy Parliament Speaker Mihail Popșoi will take over as minister of foreign affairs, while Cristina Gerasimov, who at the end of last year was named secretary of state of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, will serve as minister for European integration.
