This year, with the European Union’s support, the Republic of Moldova aims to purchase a radar system for detecting eventual dangers to the country’s security, said Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Nicu Popescu. According to him, owing to Russia’s barbarous shelling of Ukraine, the purchase of a radar system for monitoring the airspace became a matter of urgency. The safety of airspace will persuade international airlines to launch or resume the operation of flights on the Chisinau International Airport, IPN reports.

The minister noted that airspace security and resumption of flights by the Hungarian company Wizz Air were among the subjects discussed at the European Political Community Summit of June 1.

“The purchase of a radar system with the support of the European Union is this year’s priority. This thing became much more necessary and urgent owing to the Russian Federation’s brutal bombardments in Ukraine. Due to the Russian bombs that crossed our airspace, we experience problems with airline and uncertainty in business. We have discussions with Wizz Air. Both the Government of the Republic of Moldova and the Hungarian Government are for resuming the flights. Prime Minister Dorin Recean personally deals with this issue. The subject was discussed on the sidelines of the Summit and we do our best to bring as many airlines as possible to the Republic of Moldova. We are discussing with Wizz Air. We want to attract Rayan Air. Persuading them that our airline is safe when such companies as Austrian Airlines and LOT operate flights and when 40 European leaders can land is the only method of attracting these companies,” Nicu Popescu stated in the program “In Depth” on ProTV Chisinau channel.

According to the Deputy Prime Minister, the batch of equipment offered by the Government of Poland to the National Police represents assistance in strengthening our defense capabilities and in maintaining public order in the Republic of Moldova.

“In connection with this Summit, Poland decided to offer us this support. A functional police force and a functional army need not only clothes and boots. They need equipment, including lethal weapons and protection equipment. Any functional security system needs also weapons and this is crucial for the country’s capacity to keep peace and harmony,” said Nicu Popescu.

Recently, the Polish minister of home affairs announced that the Government of Poland will offer the Moldovan police substantial support. A number of planes will transport arms, munitions and equipment, such as helmets and protective gear, to Moldova.
