Today it has been a year since the Republic of Moldova was granted the EU candidate status. Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, said that it was a really historic moment in the life of the Republic of Moldova. Moreover, it was a historic chance that opened up new opportunities for the country, IPN reports.
“We have had a year full of accomplishments and remarkable progress. The first verbal report of the EU on the Republic of Moldova’s progress was positive. Our county made significant progress in the process of deoligarchization, strengthening of justice and development of administrative capacities. The European Union supported us and continues to support us to keep peace and stability in our country. Together we managed to launch the EU Partnership Mission and to sanction those who tried to destabilize our country. We together overcame winter and the energy crisis, ensuring heat and electricity in our homes,” said Nicu Popescu, being quoted in a press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to the official, this year the authorities have made sustained efforts to do important reforms in different key areas. Emphasis was placed on strengthening the democratic values, promoting transparency and the rule of law and sustainable economic and social development. Each step forward is accompanied by the firm commitment and support of the partners from the EU.
“Nevertheless, we know very well that the road to full accession to the European Union is yet full of challenges and we are aware that we have yet a lot to do to meet the rigorous criteria and standards imposed by the EU. That’s why it is essential to continue our reform efforts, to strengthen the institutions and to fully engage in the modernization and aligning with the European values. The joining of the EU is the safest way to ensure peace, stability and the freedom of our country,” noted Nicu Popescu.
On March 3, 2022, President Maia Sandu, together with Speaker Igor Grosu and Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilița, signed the Republic of Moldova’s application for EU membership.
