It would have been nice and extraordinary if Moldovan society had lived united in these 23 years, as at the start of the 1990s. We are now independent because society was then united, President Nicolae Timofti said in an interview for Radio Moldova, IPN reports.
“The most important feeling we have lived is the obtaining of independence from an empire that kept us hostage for centuries. I mean not only the Soviet Empire, but in general the empires that dominated this land. Our people managed to become free because they were united and such feelings as freedom and unity were primordial. We are all glad that we are now a free people that can determine by itself its fate and hopes for a bright and prosperous future,” said the head of state.
Nicolae Timofti also said that when Moldova became independent, society showed unity of ideas. Success can be achieved by joint actions. The adoption of the independence document was an act of courage that showed that the people always lived with the thought of being free and of organizing life as they wanted.
According to the president, many of the objectives set by the Moldovan people at the Great National Assembly of August 27, 1989 were achieved, but many things were overlooked. “We lost a lot of time to reach the current stage. We could have done it much earlier. We were able to, but could not always find the appropriate solutions. But we will yet retrieve what was lost,” said Nicolae Timofti.
Speaking about Moldova’s foreign policy, Nicolae Timofti said the country lived by the eastern system that didn’t bring prosperity. Things should be now changed. The way of life in the EU is suitable for Moldova’s people too.
The head of state noted that if a new Great National Assembly was held, he would call on the people to support the European course. “I urge the people to oppose the evil intentions and false slogans. Don’t believe those whom you don’t know. They were sent to mislead the people,” stated Nicolae Timofti.
On August 27, Moldova celebrates 23 years of independence.
