If Moldova changes its external development course, many people will be dissatisfied, as it happened in Ukraine after the process of associating with the EU was suspended. President Nicolae Timofti spoke about the issue in the program “Fabrica” on Publika TV. The head of state said it is very probable that attempts will be made to prevent Moldova from following the European course and thus he decided to convene a meeting of the Supreme Security Council on February 25 to discuss the issue, IPN reports.
“I would say that the population in Ukraine expected the Association Agreement with the EU to be signed and what happened was a reaction of the people who were waiting for this to take place. I’m sure that there will be many dissatisfied people if our external development course is changed. I’m a convinced pro-European. We now must not consider the withdrawal from the CIS, but show that we are ready to enter the EU,” stated the President.
Speaking about the referendums held in Gagauzia on February 2, Nicolae Timofti said the leaders from Comrat fulfilled a political order from inside and outside. “They must realize that the minority never had the right to manage. My opinion is that the population from this region was misled. We promote the integration into the EU not for a certain group of people, but for the whole population,” he underlined.
He does not exclude that the opponents will use the situation in the Transnistrian region to thwart the European integration process. “When I had the occasion, I always said that it is a problem in Moldova and, according to the Constitution, we cannot accept a foreign army to be present on our territory,” said Nicolae Timofti.
The Supreme Security Council will hold a meeting in the second half of February 25 to discuss the actions that must be taken to ensure the people’s security. “It’s not excluded that attempts will be made to stop the European integration process, as it happened in Ukraine. I call on the people not to allow being led astray. We work for the people, regardless of ethnicity and the spoken language,” stated the President.
As to the elections that will take place at the end of this year, Nicolae Timofti said he is convinced that the people understand that another choice than the pro-European one will be to their detriment. It depends on the possibilities and conviction force of every party, but more people are for integration into the EU than against it.
