The rapprochement with the European Union remains a major objective of the sovereign state Moldova, President Nicolae Timofti says in a message transmitted on the occasion of the country’s Sovereignty Day, IPN reports.
The Head of State noted that the 26th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Sovereignty practically coincides with a very important period for the country’s future – full coming into force of the Association Agreement and the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement with the EU, which is a symbolic event that will take place on July 1, 2016.
According to Nicolae Timofti, this day is significant for the establishment of the sovereign and independent state Moldova. The principles of sovereignty enable the people to determine themselves, in a conscious way, the present and to decide by themselves the road that they want to follow. “On the occasion of the Sovereignty Day, I wish you happiness, prosperity and accomplishments. Let’s celebrate and work together for a free future for each of us. I want to assure you of an axiomatic truth – the people is the spring and bearer of sovereignty,” says the message.
On June 23, 1990, the Supreme Soviet of the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic of the 12th legislature adopted the Declaration of Sovereignty. Sovereignty is the exclusive right to exert supreme political authority in the state. Being sovereign means managing freely the fate, independence and power.
