President Nicolae Timofti had a meeting with the Metropolitan Bishop of Chisinau and All Moldova, His Holiness Vladimir. In the meeting, the head of state underlined the role played by the Church in establishing a peaceful atmosphere in society, but didn’t raise the subject on which representatives of the Church insist – banning the propagation of homosexuality, IPN reports.
“The Church officials and the politicians must address with maximum attention and delicacy the sensitive issues that cause disputes in society,” said the head of state, being quoted in a communiqué of the presidential press service.
The sides agreed that the representatives of the Church and the state have the common task of disseminating messages of conciliation and respect for the laws and the Christian morals among the people. The head of state said in this connection that it is inadmissible for the representatives of the Church to have an aggressive and hostile attitude towards the administration of the state that was elected democratically by the people.
“The aggressive and provoking viewpoints on sensitive issues, stated by some of the representatives of the clergy, do not represent the official position of the Orthodox Church,” said the Metropolitan Bishop Vladimir. He invited Nicolae Timofti to meet with members of the Synod of the Moldovan Metropolitan Church to continue the discussions on issues of common interest in the near future.
His Holiness Vladimir informed the head of state that the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill will visit Moldova on September 7-9.
