Nicolae Timofti in Bucharest: Problems we experience brought us closer

The political and economic crisis through which Moldova goes didn’t affect the relations of cooperation with Romania. Moreover, the experienced problems brought Moldova closer to the neighboring state, President Nicolae Timofti said after a meeting with his Romanian counterpart Klaus Iohannis in Bucharest. Klaus Iohannis said Romania is determined to support Moldova on its path of European integration, IPN reports.

Nicolae Timofti noted that the privileged relations between the two states resulted in the implementation of different projects. “The constant and valuable support that Romania offers to us cannot be challenged. We would like Romania to continue to contribute to ensuring our energy independence. The rapprochement between us at economic, political and information levels must be a desideratum for the next few years,” he stated in a news conference given after the meeting.

Answering journalists’ questions, the Moldovan head of state said he regrets that the Association Agreement with the EU hasn’t been fully implemented, but is hopeful that the people of the Republic of Moldova will always choose pro-European forces in Parliament and that the objective of coming closer to the EU will be achieved.

Klaus Iohannis said he was glad to find out that some of the conditions concerning reformation, put forward by the EU and the Government of Romania, started to be met. “Mister President informed me that Parliament is ready to assist the Government in fulfilling the assumed commitments. You can count on us. We are near and we are determined to support you on the pro-European road. On the other hand, we are aware that we need more joint economic projects and I would give as example the gas pipeline that is expected to be continued so as to offer the Republic of Moldova alternative sources of energy,” he stated.

Asked about the possibility of approving soon the disbursement of the loan to Moldova, the Romanian President said everything depends on how swiftly the reforms are done. “I think the Government is interested in doing reforms, as Parliament is. We will be then ready to provide this assistance. But we don’t know how long this process takes,” stated Klaus Iohannis.

While in Bucharest, Nicolae Timofti will also have meetings with Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos and President of the Senate Calin Popescu-Tariceanu.
