Nicolae Timofti: I’m alone and with Constitution in my hands

President Nicolae Timofti said that every time he met with members of the ruling alliance he told them that he knows they have their own interests, but urged them to work for the country’s interests. He underlined that does not form part of a party and that he is alone with the Constitution in his hands and the powers given by the law, Info-Prim Neo reports. “When we had meetings, I told them: I’m not a party member and I have no group behind me. In fact I’m alone, with the Constitution in my hands and the powers given by the law. That’s why I urge you to discuss all the problems inside the alliance and to appear before the public with a common solution for the country’s benefit,” Nicolae Timofti said in a meeting of the Chisinau Press Club. He also said that measures are taken inside the alliance for its members to act unanimously in the country’s interests and he believes that they do so now as they no longer make accusations against each other, but discuss the problems between them. The President answered so when asked about Prime Minister Vlad Filat’s statements that there is a puppeteer in Moldova who manages the political life. “Every politician assesses the happening social events. Somebody found this term of puppeteer. I respect Article 21 of the Constitution, which stipulates the presumption of innocence. I always obeyed this principle. In order to say about somebody that they are guilty and break the law, we must have a court decision saying this,” said Nicolae Timofti. He also said that he promotes the policy of the Alliance for European Integration, which he makes effort to implement together with the members of the alliance. “I understood that there are definite political interests, of parties, groups and persons who want to achieve their goals through the agency of the party, the Government or Parliament. The puppeteers are persons who orchestrate from behind, in breach of the law. They manipulate the people in their own interests or group interests. Those who say there are puppeteers should name them. When they name each other, this is political struggle,” stated the President. The term of puppeteer began to be used last spring, after former first deputy chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party Mihai Godea left the party, while the party’s leader Vlad Filat said that there was a puppeteer behind his former colleague. But he revealed no names. In a press briefing afterward, Vlad Filat said that the puppeteer was his alliance colleague Vlad Plahotniuc, who tries to keep the sphere of influence that he gained during the rule of the Communists and who uses the state property.
