Nicolae Timofti feels Moldova is appreciated in Brussels
Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti stated after his first visit abroad, to Brussels, that European officials received him very well and showed great appreciation for Moldova. The President held a press briefing on Friday evening, after landing at the Chisinau International Airport, Info-Prim Neo.
In Brussels, the head of the state met the head of the European Commission Jose Manuel Durao Barroso, the president of the European Council Herman von Rompuy and the Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy Stefan Fule.
“During our discussions we focused on the situation in Moldova, on the fulfillment of our commitments to the EU. We were received very well. We are recognized as a leadin country in the Eastern Partnership Program”, he said.
Nicolae Timofti told the press that he had convinced the Europeans that Moldova was in progress of implementing the governing program. “They are willing to help and support us”, said the head of the state.
As to the liberalized visa regime, Nicolae Timofti brought the message that the Parliament should first vote the Antidiscrimination Bill and the Strategy of Reforming the Anticorruption Center. “The bills exist and are regarded as good. I hope the legislators will find a solution to adopt them”, concluded Nicolae Timofti.
The visit in Brussels is the first visit abroad of the President since his investiture. The Moldovan delegation included a representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the general secretary of the President’s Staff and his councilor on communication issues. In Brussels, the President also met with the Moldovan expats in Belgium. The visit began on April 26.
