The electoral statements must no way affect the relations of good neighborhood, friendship and cooperation with the neighboring states Romania and Ukraine. The citizens must not pay for the irresponsible and rushed statements of election runners. This is how President Nicolae Timofti responded to IPN reporter’s question “Could the statements of electoral competitors affect the relations of friendship with the neighboring states?”.
The Head of Sate said the electoral debates between the contenders for the main post in the state – of President of the Republic of Moldova – sometimes not only go beyond the limits of ethical communication, but can also distort the diplomatic dialogue. “The electoral statements are different from the political ones. The first are momentary, emotional and able to generate confusion in the diplomatic relations. Namely in this connection, the Ukrainian authorities called their ambassador for discussions. As Head of State, I’m firmly convinced that the citizens of the Republic of Moldova respect the values on which the European Union is based. The electoral statements must no way affect the relations of good neighborhood, friendship and cooperation with the neighboring states Romania and Ukraine. The citizens must not pay for irresponsible and rushed statements made by election runners,” stated President Timofti.
According to him, the European integration is the main objective of the foreign policy of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. This implies continuous efforts by both of the states for meeting the European standards. “The future President cannot be a person who, by electoral statements, creates unfavorable circumstances for destabilization. Regional and international security is very fragile for intervening with rhetoric that can entice a particular category of voters, but can also disfavor us as a nation. I reiterate the firm support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine and other states. But I first of all underline the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova, which is a unitary state with one political power enshrined in the fundamental law,” said Nicolae Timofti.
He also said that his successor will have the constitutional obligation to demand that the Russian Federation should withdraw its troops and munitions from Moldova’s territory, in accordance with the assumed international commitments. “I transmitted with a lot of sincerity this message from different international rostrums and I believe that this call will not be suspended after the presidential elections. I express my conviction that after the November 13 elections, we will maintain relations of friendship with the neighboring states and will make progress in implementing the initiated project – to modernize and promote moral principles in governance. The new President will have to respect the country’s Constitution and the principles of international law so as to avoid any political calamities at national and international levels. Emotions and political egoism are most dangerous for a Head of State. The national interest must become the doctrine of the new President, supported by the people of this country,” President Nicolae Timofti stated for IPN.
IPN asked President Timofti to state his position after the Ambassador of Ukraine was summoned to Kiev following statements about the Crimean Peninsula made by one of the candidates for President of Moldova.
