Nicolae Testemiţanu brought medicine closer to the people from rural areas when he laid the scientific basis of family medicine. The period during which he served as minister of health, in 1963 – 1968, is considered the golden epoch in the development of national medicine. Today, when it is 95 years of the birth of the professor, mates, friends and pupils commemorated him in an event at the Sociocultural Complex of “Nicolae Testemiţanu” State University of Medicine and Pharmacy, IPN reports.
Nicolae Testemiţanu was an authority in the medical community and he held different strategic posts. He launched the reform at the State University of Medicine and Pharmacy and opened new departments, including the Traumatology and Orthopedics Department. “Serving as Minister of Health, the academician worked out strategies designed to consolidate the assets of the health system, to ensure the system with medical personnel, to improve the methods of organizing medical assistance provided for the population. He pleaded for ensuring the health system with mostly national medical staff and for introducing Romanian in the process of training students and doctors,” said Ion Prisăcaru, secretary of state at the Ministry of Health.
Student Nicolae Testemițanu formed part of the famous second class of the State Institute of Medicine of Chisinau of 1951, which was later called “the godlen class”. “Namely the representatives of this class contributed to founding and developing higher medical education, medical sciences and the national health system. We owe the fame enjoyed by our university in the country and abroad mainly to these remarkable personalities,” said the rector of “Nicolae Testemiţanu” University Emil Ceban.
Cristiana Morcov, fifth-year students of the Faculty of Medicine, said that she is proud to be a student of this university that bears the name of the illustrious scientist. “He devoted his life to medicine and we, as his successors, try hard to follow the same values and to become recognized, as the emeritus Nicolae Testemițanu,” stated the student.
Nicolae Testemiţanu died on September 20, 1986. Posthumously, he was conferred the title of academician of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. Since 1990, the State University of Medicine and Pharmacy has borne his name.
