Nicolae Andronic: The Voronin regime will persecute everyone who will stand in its way in 2009 elections

Everything that happens today in Moldova points to the fact that the Voronin regime will initiate criminal proceedings against the politicians it fears, in order to deter them from running in the 2009 parliamentary elections, Nicolae Andronic, president of the Republican People’s Party (PPR), told a news conference on Thursday, January 24. Thus, the intention to amend the Electoral Code so as to ban persons with criminal record from running in elections has become very clear. The law enforcement bodies, instead of fighting corruption that has spread all over the country, will now work to oppress the Opposition, Andronic said. Nicolae Andronic made these statements in connection to the fact that he has recently been summoned to appear before the Prosecutor General’s Office on Friday, January 25, to be quizzed as a suspect on authority abuse charges. He said he expected everything, including his arrest. Both Andronic and his lawyer, Gheorghe Malic, complained about the way in which the criminal proceedings opened against the PPR leader a year ago are conducted, accusing the prosecutor of abuses, violations and harassment.
