The Liberal Party issued an “eye for an eye” message by refusing to vote for the representative of civil society in the National Integrity Commission (CNI). This proves that politicians don’t tolerate civil society’s criticism directed towards them. The opinion is shared by representatives of several NGOs that reacted to the rejection of Galinia Bostan’s CNI candidature, Info-Prim Neo reports. Director of the Resource Center for Human Rights (CReDO) Sergiu Ostaf told the press on December 28 that more than 15 NGOs signed a petition to the Parliament, to diplomatic missions and international organizations, Moldova’s development partners, informing about the actions of politicians and about the worries of civil society. “What happened fits in a series of politicians’ actions meant to hinder the activity of civil society. CNI faces a massive lack of trust. Its members haven’t been verified. Through their actions, they try to prevent the truth about politicians’ integrity from being found out”, stressed Ostaf. Director of the Independent Press Association (API) Petru Macovei thinks that PL has a hidden agenda and other reasons than those claimed when it didn’t vote for civil society’s candidate. He says that during the Communist government there were NGOs created specially by the government in order to occupy the positions meant for civil society representatives. The API directors fears that such NGOs will appear again. Lilia Carasciuc, director of Transparency International Moldova, opts for legislative changes so that civil society had more freedom and was able to monitor the CNI activity. Head of the Association for Participatory Democracy (ADEPT) told the Liberals that it is unfair to punish a citizen for using the information published on the Parliament’s webpage. He added that MPs should insist for the Parliament’s secretariat to correct the mistakes. Chairman of the East-European Foundation Sorin Mereacre accused Liberal leader of gender discrimination for saying that he respected Galina Bostan as a lady and that ladies must be loved, caressed and hugged. Sorin Mereacre said that such words were not fit for an MP. The Parliament didn’t support Galina Bostan candidature, selected by the specialized commission, for CNI membership as representative of civil society. She needed 51 votes, but got only 45 as the Liberal and Communists groups didn’t support her.
