NGOs seeks dismissal of Chisinau chief architect Vladimir Modarca

Members of a number of nongovernmental organizations Monday picketed the Chisinau City Hall, demanding that the head of the General Division of Architecture, Urbanism and Land Relations Vlad Modarca be dismissed, Info-Prim Neo reports. Veaceslav Iordache, a member of the Association “Padurea-Rascani”, said they protest against the destruction of the architectural monuments in Chisinau’s historical center. He stated that these monuments should be preserved and restored. According to him, chief architect Vlad Modarca and deputy mayor Nistor Grozavu should be dismissed for negligence. The protesters also accused Mayor General Dorin Chirtoaca of taking no steps to stop the illegal demolitions. “We remain without history and without Chisinau,” said a member of the Civic Group for the Protection of the Cultural Heritage Anatolie Juraveli. He stressed that the city should be restored, not destroyed. The protesters chanted such slogans as “Chirtoaca, fire Modarca or you will be fired instead”, “A destroyed monument, a servant in jail,” “Modarca, stop destroying Chisinau”. According to the protesters, three monuments have been taken down in the historical center of Chisinau so far this year – one located on Petru Movila St, another one situated on Vasile Alecsandri, and the third one located on Bucuresti St.
