NGOs make themselves heard through mass media
The nongovernmental organizations can make themselves heard and promote their activities mainly through the mass media. The assertion was made in a training seminar that was attended by representatives of about 30 NGOs . They learned how an organization can assert itself and attract the press to its events and how to correctly convey messages, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“The NGOs should cooperate with the mass media so that they make their voice heard. Effort should be made to achieve success,” said UNDP communication consultant Ina Prisacaru.
Vitalie Dogaru, of Publika TV, said the mass media and the NGOs have common interests in community development, but the nongovernmental organizations are often not prepared to discuss with representatives of the media and address issues that hold interest only for a reduced number of people. “The mass media not always manage to deal with the problems that the NGOs consider important, mainly because they have to address other issues that they consider more important,” he stated.
Roxana Teodorcic, communication and monitoring manager at the Academy for Educational Development, said it is very important for the NGOs to work with the mass media so that they are able promote their activities and convey the message to the people. “The seminar is designed to answer such questions as: What must an NGO do to reach the journalist?, How to organize a press event and who to contact in a media outlet to invite journalists to the event,” she stated.
Seminar participant Natalia Boichenko, of the Community Center for Children and Youth with Disabilities, said any organization needs the support of the mass media. “I learned that the NGOs should always propose something new and interesting so as to attract attention from the press. We will try to do so,” she said.
Cristina Turcu, of the Balti-based organization Medecine Du Monde, who is responsible for communication with the mass media, said the press in Balti is ready to attend the events staged by the NGOs, but they need wider knowledge in order to be in the spotlight.
The seminar was organized by the Academy for Educational Development, the U.S. Agency for International Development, and Parc Communication.
