NGO suggests child-friendly examination procedures in child abuse cases
The National Center for Child Abuse Prevention is drafting an agreement on the promotion and implementation of the legislation, aimed at preventing the traumatization of children during investigations. The accord is to be signed by the Ministry of Justice and the Prosecutor General's Office.
When the children are investigated, they find themselves inside a legal examination machinery. Sometimes the children are traumatized owing to the inappropriate atmosphere in which they are questioned, the Center's head Daniela Samboteanu told Info-Prim Neo.
The NGO suggests child-friendly examination procedures. “The children must be quizzed in protective environments, where they can express their thoughts through drawings and parallels and show what's happened to them with the help of toys, not in police stations and offices that are not adjusted for such situations,” said Daniela Samboteanu. The questioning room must be equipped with a system for recording the statements made by the child so as to avoid new questioning sessions.
One of the conclusions of the international conference on the issue held by the Center in September was that the problem resides in the attitude of the representative of the institutions of law towards the child. “The investigators must take into account the age particularities. The children's rights must be promoted and the procedures will then improve,” Daniela Samboteanu said, adding the representatives of the law enforcement bodies must be taught how to behave towards the abused children.
The National Center for Child Abuse Prevention is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization founded in January 1997 to prevent child abuse.
