The people who are in litigation with banks, leasing or lending companies can receive free legal advice by phone from jurists of the League for the Protection of Consumers’ Rights. The service was launched as a result of the situation created at Banca de Economii, the NGO’s head Roman Mihaes told a news conference, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. The persons who cannot withdraw money, suspect fraudulent contracts or took out loans at excessively high interest can use the green line 022 23-83-16 between 9am and 5pm, from Monday through Friday. “The banks must be the safest institutions for keeping money in. This is the interest that made us become involved,” stated Roman Mihaes. According to him, the banking system in Moldova developed strangely during the independence years. Several banks went bankrupt and the only bank controlled by the state - Banca de Economii – is now in difficulty too. Roman Mihaeas said the Government of Moldova should resign at this week’s meeting. “The AEI 2 Government can bury Moldova’s European dream. Unfortunately, we have a political government consisting of the political clientele of the ruling parties. The PLDM, PDM and PL appointed the ministers based exclusively on political criteria,” he stated. The head of the League for the Protection of Consumers’ Rights stressed it is imperatively necessary to change the management of Banca de Economii, while those who now manage the bank should resign. The league will monitor the work of the parliamentary commission of inquiry into the situation at this bank and the whole banking system. Afterward, the NGO may suggest proposals for improving the situation in the banking system. The League for the Protection of Consumers’ Rights was founded as a public organization in 2000 to defend the consumers.
