NGO deplores miserable conditions in Moldova’s maternity wards

The president of the civic association “Moldova Mea” (“My Moldova”), Fiodor Ghelici, is accusing the government of not being able to provide adequate conditions in maternity wards, complaining at a news conference today that Moldova’s women are forced to give birth to babies in unimaginable conditions, Info-Prim Neo reports. Ghelici said he had the occasion to see the conditions that the fresh mothers and newborns have to endure in maternities when his daughter-in-law gave birth to a girl. More than a week after birth, the mother and the girl are still staying at the maternity ward, with the baby admitted to intensive care. Ghelici told reporters how astonished he was to find such misery at the hospital: a dirty bathtub, no tap water, even cold water, and no electrical light in the wards. “The government concerns itself with digging wells, restoring monasteries, but completely neglects the conditions in which babies are brought into this world”, declared Ghelici. His son, Sergey, the girl’s father, complains that all this time he has been pressured by medical workers into paying money for the care given to his daughter. He claimed he asked the Anticorruption Center for help but was refused on the grounds that no bribe-taking acts have occurred. Dr. Victor Savin, the chief executive of the Hospital no.1, the maternity in which Ghelici’s granddaughter was born, says he took over the institution when it was a real mess, and hasn’t managed yet to deal away with a host of problems, because of the strained circumstances. Dr. Savin hopes that, following press reports, the government will pay increased attention to hospitals, especially maternity wards.
