Next referendums will center on NATO, Romanian language and second Romanian state, Communist MP

“The referendum is a caprice of one person named Marian Lupu, who wants to become head of state by all means possible. They (the Alliance for European Integration – e.n.) need a referendum in order to campaign because the referendum is ultimately an electoral campaign,” Communist lawmaker Iurie Muntean said in a program on Radio Free Europe, Info-Prim Neo reports. “It is evident that Marian Lupu will raise the issue of the President's powers as well and the next referendum will focus on these powers. Later, the referendums will center on NATO, the Romanian language and the second Romanian state. They are now checking the practicality of the referendum,” Iurie Muntean said. According to the Communist MP, the PCRM is the most likely winner of the presidential elections as it has the largest number of voters, while the amendment of Article 78 of the Constitution will eliminate the necessity of dissolving the Parliament. The faction of the Communists Party stopped attending the sittings of the legislative body in March 2010, arguing Acting President Mihai Ghimpu must dissolve the Parliament. The Communists announced they will boycott the September 5 referendum as well, urging their voters not to vote in it.
