Newly-appointed UN Coordinator presents credentials
Nicola Harrington-Buhay, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations and Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Moldova presented her credentials to Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti at a meeting on Friday, the UN Office in Moldova said in a press release.
During the meeting, President Timofti and Nicola Harrington-Buhay reviewed the 20 years of cooperation between Moldova and the United Nations. They discussed Moldova’s commendable progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals and ways to further the country’s European objectives, including strengthening the rule of law and human rights for all.
Speaking about the current drought, Nicola Harrington-Buhay mentioned the UN’s support in assessing its impact on the agricultural sector and on the most vulnerable populations. She underlined the UN’s commitment to work together with all partners to strengthen the country’s resilience to natural disasters and climate change.
“It is an enormous privilege to be entrusted with the role of United Nations Resident Coordinator, serving the Republic of Moldova. Building on our 20 years’ cooperation to date, I look forward to supporting the Government and people of Moldova in achieving the future they want”, said Nicola Harrington-Buhay during the meeting. “The UN Team will continue their work towards the common goal of ensuring a better life for all people in Moldova”.
Before being appointed to the Republic of Moldova, Nicola Harrington-Buhay served as Deputy Director of the United Nations/UNDP Office in Brussels coordinating the UN’s engagement on development policy issues with institutions of the European Union.
The United Nations established a presence in Moldova soon after the country joined the United Nations in 1992. Over twenty resident and non-resident UN specialized agencies, funds and programs work in Moldova, contributing to the achievement of the country’s development priorities.
