New water management mechanisms to be worked out

A commission set up by the Government will devise a new mechanism for managing the waters and protecting them against floods. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Valeriu Lazar said the commission will carry out a feasibility study of the easily flooded areas and analyze the flooding potential of the Nistru and Prut and smaller rivers. There will be assessed the condition of the levees, Info-Prim Neo reports. The commission will work out a plan of action for building and reconstructing the hydro-technical and irrigation systems and the pumping and water treatment stations and for identifying the money needed to implement these projects. It will also formulate amendments to the legislative framework in accordance with the international standards and will start devising the national water management and protection strategy. Valeriu Lazar will head the commission that will consist of the ministers of the environment, construction, finance, agriculture, transport, and health, the president of the Academy of Sciences, the directors general of Moldova's Water Agency, the Land Relations Agency and the Cadaster Agency, the head of the Civil Protection and Emergencies Service, and the director general of the State Hydrometeorology Service.
