A new view on the development of the Byk River in the limits of Chisinau city will be presented on January 28. The idea was formulated by the organizers of the international conference “Identities of Chisinau” , namely the National Association of Young Historians and the Civic Group for Cultural Heritage, in concert with the Architecture Department and the Faculty of Urbanism and Architecture of the Technical University of Moldova.

Margareta Petrushevski, a member of the Civic Group for Cultural Heritage, in a news conference at IPN said a plan for developing the territory near the Byk River will be worked out and this will include the designing of a modern administrative block that will consist of a recreation center, a digital library, an exhibition hall, a hotel, cafes, etc. “The given initiative appeared in the absence of a concept of sustainable development of Chisinau, which would meet the demographic, economic and cultural parameters,” stated Margareta Petrushevski.

Architecture Department head Aurelia Carpov said the students who study architecture at the Technical University of Moldova are ready to rehabilitate the riverbed. “The goal of the project is to show that there are will and force to transform Chisinau into a modern, comfortable and sustainable city,” noted Aurelia Carpov.

The president of the National Association of Young Historians Sergiu Musteață said the intention is to present a vision of what Chisinau city can be in the future. This can be a model for the other localities of Moldova. “If we do not make concerted effort, we will not manage to develop a city in accordance with our expectations,” stated Sergiu Musteață.

“Chisinau is the only city in the region that forgot it has a river. The river is not even taken into account by all the development documents worked out by the public administration, as if it does not exist,” said Alexandru Corduneanu, a member of the Civic Group for Cultural Heritage.

After the workshop “City and the river” set for January 28, at the end of February there will be presented the areas of the territory near the river that will be proposed for being developed. There will be agreed the composition of the working groups that will design the development plans. The best projects will be chosen and presented at the final stage of the workshop, in autumn.
