New tremor felt in Moldova

A new earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale occurred in Vrancea region of Romania at 5:31am this morning, August 2. This was felt in Moldova too, mainly in the central and southern parts of the country.

Head of the Experimental Seismology Center of the Institute of Geology and Seismology of Chisinau Ion Ilies has told IPN that the quake was slightly more powerful than the one that happened in the afternoon of August 1. It occurred at a depth of 124 km. In Chisinau, its intensity was of 3 degrees on a scale of 0 to 12. Such tremors pose no danger to humans and buildings. Most probably, the quake was felt by those who didn’t sleep at that moment.

Contacted by IPN, Liliana Puscacu, press officer of the Civil Protection and Emergencies Service, said the operational services reported no damage or emergencies and no calls to 901 were made in this regard.

The most recent earthquake that was felt in Moldova occurred at 1.27pm on August 1. It measured 4.6 on the Richter scale, while in Chisinau its intensity was of about 3 degrees. Quakes occurred in July as well. One of these measured 3.1 on the Richter scale. A more powerful earthquake, of 4.7 degrees, took place in the middle of May.

According to specialists, earthquakes that measure 7 on the Richter scale and happen at a depth of 60-200 can be dangerous for populaces in the area where Moldova is situated.
