Work is underway to plant eighteen new trees within and around Mihai Eminescu Square in central Chisinau to replace the old and dead ones, the City Hall announced.
The trees being planted are 7-8-year-old Tilia Platyphyllos, or large-leaved lindens, the Green Spaces agency said.
According to mayor Ion Ceban, the project provides for the expansion of the green spaces around the Square to enhance the area and its architectural heritage.
The renovation of the Mihai Eminescu Square began three years ago, but soon the trees started dying. Specialists blamed it on the new pavement preventing moisture from reaching the roots.
