New Transnistrian leader to be chosen in December

The residents of Transnistria will take part in the co-called presidential elections on December 11. The local electoral authority decided that the electoral period starts on December 12, IPN reports.

Yevgheny Shevchuk won the so-called presidential elections in Transnistria by the second round held on December 25, 2011, outstripping then Anatoly Kaminski.

Yevgheny Shevchuk polled over 70% of the vote, while Anatoly Kaminski – about 20%. The rest of the electors voted against both of the candidates. Igor Smirnov, who had ruled in the Transnistrian region for 20 years and ran for the sixth term in office, gained 24.66% of the poll in the first round of voting.
