Two new sets of traffic lights will be installed at the intersection of Pushkin Street and Stefan cel Mare Boulevard in the center of Chisinau. The pedestrian traffic light overlooking the Metropolitan Cathedral square will be moved from this intersection, Info-Prim Neo reports. According Chisinau Mayor Doring Chirtoaca, two new sets of traffic lights will be added near the existing ones for a trial period to change the way crossing is done at that intersection. “Modifying the access on Pushkin Street by connecting 2 new sets of traffic lights at its intersection with Stefan cel Mare Boulevard is necessary because that place is always jammed by traffic. So we must move the cross-walk down the street and test how we can unblock that intersection”, said Chirtoaca. Chirtoaca added that a future project foresees installing static surveillance cameras on the city’s streets and mobile cameras in police vehicles. “The surveillance cameras will scan everything they keep an eye on and detect where a car is parked illegally. All the information about the driver, car etc. will be stored in a database and that data will be printed with photographic evidence on the illegal parking, the place, the license plates and the fine will be mailed to the driver’s home. If the driver refuses to pay the fine travel restrictions will be imposed or the driver will be denied the right to pass the technical overhaul”, said the mayor. Drivers risk a 100 up to 200 lei fine for parking in unauthorized areas, as well as 2 penalty points. If the illegal parking causes a situation that leads to an accident, the driver will be fined for up to 2000 lei.
