The mechanism for purchasing food products for schools and kindergartens needs to be improved, said Gheorghe Gaberi, director general of the National Food Safety Agency. He told the journalists that the Agency worked out strict requirements concerning all the products supplied to education institutions.
“It is important to meet these requirements and thorough control should be ensured. In this connection, we agreed the responsibilities with the Ministry of Health so that no aspect remains outside control,” said the Agency’s director general.
According to Gheorghe Gaberi, at this stage the education divisions sign contracts for the supply of food products valid for six months. In some of the cases, they do not even know how those products will look, especially if it is about vegetables or fruit. Thus, other methods for purchasing these products and products with a short use-by date are required.
