New political body in GUAM countries pleads for improving dialogue with Russia

“Patria-Rodina” Moldovan Socialists Party participated in the foundation of a new political institution – the Coordinating council of parties and political movements from GUAM countries (Georgia, Ukraine Azerbaijan and Moldova). The head of the “Patria-Rodina” Moldovan Socialists Party, Veronica Abramciuc told a press conference on Thursday, December 28 that the new structure will contribute to the transition from an economic-political confrontation in the post soviet space to a constructive cooperation between the CIS countries, including at the regional level. Parties in the council represent the extra-parliamentary opposition in the mentioned countries. “We will show the electorate that the current policy run within the frameworks of the western project GUAM is wrong and non-constructive for the development of the member states. The aim of this project envisaged that Azerbaijan would deliver energy resources for the GUAM countries so that they could give up Russia’s resources. The facts proved that Azerbaijan does not have the possibility to deliver gas to these countries, and the action resulted in a conflict with Russia. The member-states can cooperate in the economic, cultural and political spheres without taking the confrontation with the Russian Federation as a base”, Abramciuc said. The head of the political movement “Azerbaijan’s Path” and the president of the new body, Elgar Kasymov, who was present at the press conference, stated that the national interest of the 4 GUAM member-states is to maintain good relations with their neighbours, whoever they are. “In order to please Russia one does not have to argue with the West, or vice versa. We should chose a civilized path, the path of good neighbouring relations, which is an interest aimed by every country, including Russia”, the cited source mentioned. According to Veronica Ambramciuc, the Coordinating council of parties and political movements from GUAM countries is only at its foundation stage, and the structure is open to new parties from the member-states. Even in this phase, there are parties and movements in Moldova which are willing to join the new political body, she added.
