Seventy-three Peace Corps Volunteers have arrived in Chisinau. During 10 weeks, they will do intensive Romanian and Russian language courses and will study the traditions and culture of Moldova so as to better integrate. When the courses are completed, the volunteers will work in schools, mayor’s offices, community centers and business incubators all over the country, the U.S. Embassy in Chisinau has said.

Contacted by IPN, Peace Corps administration assistant Liuba Chitaev said that after the ten-week courses, the volunteers will go to live with Moldova families. The Peace Corps will cover the minimum costs incurred by the volunteers and will supervise their stay in Moldova.

Since its founding in 1961, the Peace Corps sent volunteers to 139 countries, meeting new challenges head-on with innovation, determination and understanding. The purpose of the Peace Corps is to assist other countries in their development efforts by providing skilled workers in the fields of education, agriculture, health, trade, technology, and community development.

Since 1993, Volunteers have been serving in Moldova. This is the 29th group of volunteers of the largest volunteer nongovernmental organization.
