Petru Rotaru took an oath of office as minister of finance. The swearing-in ceremony was held at the Presidential Palace on Tuesday afternoon, IPN reports.

“I swear to devote all my personal strength and abilities to the prosperity of the Republic of Moldova, to abide by the Constitution and the laws of the country, to defend democracy, fundamental human rights and freedoms, the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Moldova,” said Petru Rotaru.

Attending the event, President Maia Sandu said the expectations of society and the business community are very big. “We want less bureaucracy for honest businesspeople and want you to firmly act against those who resort to fiscal evasion and want to avoid the law. We want increased transparency in the sphere of government procurement and want efficiency in the management of state resources, including resources generated internally, and foreign assistance,” stated the official.

President Sandu also said that the experience of the new minister of financier is valuable for continuing the efforts to reduce bureaucracy in the fiscal and customs sectors. The new Customs Code takes effect next year and a lot of work will be needed to implement the provisions of this.

Petru Rotaru has worked in the financial-fiscal sector since 2006, both in the private sector and in the public sector. In 2010-2012, he managed the Ialoveni State Tax Inspectorate, while since March 2023 – the State Tax Inspectorate. He graduated from the Faculty of Finance of the Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova. He has a master’s degree in fiscal-financial law from the same institution.

Petru Rotaru replaced Veronica Sirețeanu who served as minister of finance since February 2023 and who went on maternity leave.
