New local elections set and suspended earlier to be held May 29

The rerun mayoral elections arranged earlier by the Central Election Commission (CEC) for May 15, which were suspended in connection with the state of emergency, will take place on May 29. The MPs today adopted amendments to the February 24 decision by which a state of emergency was declared nationwide, IPN reports.

In accordance with the legislation, elections cannot be held during the state of emergency. The CEC proposed amending the legislation so that this stipulates that the state of emergency does not affect the organization and holding of mayoral elections in territorial units this summer. “This way, elections could be held in those localities at the end of May so that there is enough time for campaigning” said Olesea Stamate, the head of the Parliament’s legal commission on appointments and immunities.

The draft decision was passed unanimously.

Mayors elections on May 29 will take place in: Glinjeni village of Fălești district; Ghetlova village of Orhei district; Horodiște village of Rezina district; Zastânca village of Soroca district; Moara de Piatră village of Drochia district, and Tătărești village of Strășeni district; Păulești village of Călărași district; Alexăndrești commune and Zăicani village of Râșcani district, and Hagimus village of Căușeni district. The new makeup of the local council of Lozova village of Strășeni district will be elected also the same day.

Parliament decreed a state of emergency for a 60-day period on February 24 in connection with the situation in Ukraine.
