New driver’s licenses for European area will be issued from mid-June
As from June 15, the Moldovans could apply for new drivers’ licenses recognized in the European area. The license will be issued at request and will be valid for ten years, Info-Prim Neo reports.
According to Ilie Bricicaru, the head of the Transport and Car Drivers Records Division of the Ministry of Information Development, the new licenses are designed to facilitate the movement of drivers via the European area. They meet the European standards and are better protected. The information about the owner of the car is stored in an electronic chip incorporated into the license, Ilie Bricicaru has told Info-Prim Neo.
To obtain the new licenses, the drivers will have to take more difficult exams. The procedure is the same, but the number of exam topics has increased. Special tests are prepared for every category of applicants, the cited source said. The number of theoretical and practical classes has been equalized. The applicants for the new license will also take a mandatory psychological test.
Under the regulations concerning the issuing of drivers’ licenses, the system of subcategories will be introduced on the basis of the existent categories ABCD. For instance, the category A (motorcycles) has three subcategories: AM, A-1, A-2. The category AM allows driving a motor bicycle with a cylindrical capacity of up to 50 cubic centimeters, at a speed of up to 45 kilometers per hour. The category A-1 enables to drive a motorcycle with a capacity of 125 cubic centimeters, while A-2 – a motorcycle with a power of up to 35 kilowatt per hour, Ilie Bricicaru said.
The regulations increase the age at which the drivers could apply for a license. Category A could be obtained at the age of 24, as against 16 at present, while category C – at 21 years, as opposed to 19 years at present, etc. The young people would be allowed to drive a motor bicycle from the age of 14 if they have a certificate showing that they have completed special courses, while the persons that turned 65 will have to confirm the validity of the driver’s license every three years. The obtaining of the category B will be an obligatory condition for obtaining the other categories.
The drivers’ licenses issued during a day will cost 700 lei, while during a month - 190 lei.
The decision to issue a new type of driver’s licenses was taken by the Government in November 2007. This decision creates the framework needed to apply the Directive on the Driver’s License No.127 of 2006 of the Parliament and the Council of the European Union, published in the official journal of the EU.
