New conflict between city and central authorities – City Day and Wine Day scheduled for the same date

The simultaneous organisation of the City Day and Wine Day could spark a new conflict between the Chisinau administration and the central authorities. Chisinau Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca told a City Hall meeting on Tuesday that the central authorities requested authorisation to organise the Wine Day on October 13 and 14, the days dedicated to the celebration of the City Day. Chirtoaca admits that the intention of organising the Wine Day concomitantly with the City Day could be deliberate, and that could mark a new episode of the conflict between the city and central authorities, resumed after the local elections. “I think this is a movie that is going to last for quite some time. In the end everyone could see for himself who was right and who was wrong”, the mayor said. He said he informed the public opinion about the intention of the central authorities, because that is how he thought it would be better to find out why the country’s leadership has been acting like that. In Chirtoaca’s view, the date when the City Day is to be celebrated is not negotiable, because it would be an “offence to all the citizens” Referring to the possibility of celebrating the two holidays on the same day, Chirtoaca said that that would compromise them both. “By mixing the two holidays, we will get a Wine Day and nothing more”, said the mayor. Dorin Chirtoaca stated that the local authorities will examine the situation and deliver the decision on the two holidays in a couple of days.
