In the Republic of Moldova, the diabetes accounts for about 48% of all the endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases. Over the past three years, the new cases of diabetes have grown in number 1.5 times. Specialists warn that when diabetes is undetected and inadequately treated, people with diabetes are at higher risk of serious and life-threatening complications, such as heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, blindness and lower-limb amputation, IPN reports.
According to the National Public Health Agency, the rise is from 280.8 cases per 100,000 people in 2020 to 409.9 cases per 100,000 people in 2022. The death rate last year was 16.5 per 100,000 people.
For the third consecutive year, World Diabetes Day celebrated on November 14 is held under the theme “Access to Diabetes Care” to underline the necessity of ensuring better access to diabetes prevention, diagnosing, treatment and care.
Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood glucose.
One in ten 10 adults around the world are currently living with diabetes. Most of people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes. An estimated 44% of adults living with diabetes are undiagnosed. Over three in four adults with diabetes live in low- and middle-income countries.
Approximately 6.7 million adults are estimated to have died due to diabetes or its complications in 2021. Diabetes accounts for 9% of global health care expenditure. One out of three adults with diabetes has kidney disease.
A healthy diet, regular physical activity, maintaining a normal body weight and avoiding tobacco use are ways to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. Diabetes can be treated and its consequences avoided or delayed with diet, physical activity, medication and regular screening and treatment for complications.
In connection with World Diabetes Day, the local subdivisions of the National Public Health Agency, in cooperation with local medical institutions, will stage diabetes screening activities for the population, activities to inform and mobilize communities so as to promote a healthy lifestyle.
